The magic pavilion
A space for thinking and letting the imagination
fly freely, a modular building
where wood stands out as its absolute
protagonist. This is the new I + D + I Pavilion
for the company Embutidos Martínez,
designed by the Valencian studio of Mano
de Santo.
When creating this new space necessary for the
area of corporate innovation from the food sector,
the Mano de Santo studio took into account
the premise of not interfering with the works
of office expansion in its daily operation. To do
this, it opted for a modular dry construction
that would allow modular construction, and
then to carry out the installation and assembly
works on site, in the non-working hours that
the company is not active.
In this way, six prismatic modules of 4.810 x
2.60 x 3.29 meters were suggested, dimensions
that perfectly fit transport by trucks. These
six modules make up a prism of pure geometry
with total approximate dimensions of 16.20
x 4.8 x 3.20 meters. This prism is presented as
an apparently closed element, without any reference
to the exterior beyond its industrial nature,
enhanced by the chosen exterior cladding:
a mini-wave steel plate lacquered in a microperforated
grey colour. “The box, apparently
closed from the outside, becomes a completely
open box from the inside,” explains Francesc
de Paula García, one of the project’s architects.
Contrasting wood interiors
The flooring and coverings respond to this idea
of flexible and removable space. “We chose different
solutions for interior finishes in wood for
floors, walls and ceilings, which were perfectly
adapted to the modular construction, achieving
continuous solutions for the coatings, which
hint very subtly to the constructive operation of
the system”. In this way it is allowed, at a given
moment, to disassemble the coverings partially
in order to move them to another place.

Interiores contrastados de madera
Los pavimentos y revestimientos responden
a esa idea de espacio flexible y desmontable.
“Elegimos distintas soluciones de acabados
interiores en madera para los suelos, paredes
y techos, que se adaptaban perfectamente a
la construcción modular, consiguiendo soluciones
continuas en los revestimientos, que
insinúan de forma muy sutil el funcionamiento
constructivo del sistema”. De esta forma se
permite, en un momento dado, desmontar los
revestimientos parcialmente para trasladarlos
a otro lugar.
Wood in two very contrasting tones: Oak and
black. “Wood conveys warmth and separates
us from the industrial environment of the company;
likewise, the contrasted combination of
these finishes has the objective of transmitting
a strong personality of its own “. And that is
because the Pavilion was born without a defined
use, but with a very clear idea: it should
be a very differentiated space from the rest of
the company’s facilities, with its own character.
