“Mediterranean design puts us ahead of the
Scandinavian or the American equivalents”
Now that 50 years have passed since Actiu was founded by Vicent Berbegal; Soledad, his daughter and Director of Corporate
Communication, reflects on 2017 which has been full of successes for the office furniture company.
On the verge of celebrating its 50th anniversary
and with a European Entrepreneur
of the Year Award, a National Design
Award and a Red Dot in hand, how was
the year of 2017 for Actiu?
It’s been an amazing and very exciting year. All
those awards mean that things are going well.
It represents a validation for the generations
that founded the company and also for all the
new generations that now comprise Actiu. It is
an injection of positivism and continuous joy.
But not only for the awards. We are noticing
an improvement in the contract sector in general,
in the Spanish market, etc.
As a communication director, what part of
these awards is a result of your own proper
It is a generalized merit. We are a team. And
that is the most beautiful thing, that we are
all very integrated and have the same hopes.
We share everything and develop everything
together. There is nothing that is exclusively
mine. I constantly raise ideas and it is the whole
team that rates them, and if they are accepted,
they develop and become a reality. But I
simply contribute just like any other person on
Your father and founder of the company
started with a small workshop and now Actiu
is active in 94 countries. How have you
experienced this meteoric evolution since
you started working for the company?
In a very natural way. It is true that when I worked
in other companies I always looked out of
the corner of my eye at what was happening
in Actiu. We are very restless and this evolution
is our natural rhythm. I have also had the
luck that my parents, both of them, have been
very good communicators when transmitting
everything that was happening and they have
had a very constructive attitude, knowing how
to spread their hopes to others. They made us
participate and gave us the confidence to contribute
our vision and ideas.

In 2016 you launched the “Cool Working”
campaign to generate a change in work
environments in favor of a more comfortable,
motivating and inspiring environment.
Now Actiu has obtained a Red Dot Award
from that campaign, but has the message
penetrated into the new workspaces? Do
you notice at Actiu a real change in the
way of office-working?
The message has got through, yes, but there
is still a lot to do. People are aware that space
helps to improve wellbeing and productivity,
but we have to reflect, raise awareness and
show the tangible results of how those spaces
improve the processes and attitudes of people.
That is why we are talking with many entrepreneurs,
architects and interior designers in
this country. The medium and small companies
are the ones we work with the most work and
they are also the ones that should champion
the change. They should be aware that small
changes in the workspace can be a big step
forward in day to day operations.
