43 The Observatory of Habitat Trends has developed a research project,
as requested by the Ceramic Technological Institute (ITC) and the
Technological Institute of Metalworking, Furniture, Wood, Packaging
and Related Trades (AIDIMME), which have identified four major trends
in offices and work-spaces.
The colliding office
Collision is the key. The new offices are a place of interrelation, where
breaks are productive, and where creativity and collaboration are encouraged.
They are open and multifunctional spaces, with flexible workstations
and common areas as meeting places. Furniture with multiple uses,
vertical display surfaces and the possibility of connecting devices furnish
these environments.
Office in motion
In motion. Work does not take place in a single space. The hot desking
phenomenon corresponds to this trend. This is a work-site with
different users, not individual ones. Furniture and equipment respond
to this diversity. As virtual work grows, office space is reduced, but it is

needed, for a few hours or just occasionally: a video conference, a file
consultation, for a while working from the laptop ... Furniture is already
responding with specific pieces for concrete and ephemeral tasks.
Any place is a workspace
Home, cafeterias, restaurants, means of transport, public spaces… Work
habits and new technologies move the office to any spot. This relocation
is linked to the flexi-working concept, work by-objective that can be
undertaken when and where the worker prefers. The furniture and equipment
of the habitat introduces these new functions, but they may also
be introduced via urban furniture or via the common areas of contract
business spaces.
Happy & healthy office
Happy and healthy. The office brings physical, emotional and cognitive
well-being to employees. Reducing intellectual fatigue, promoting
comfort and postural correction, and by offering moments of disconnection
this favours productivity. Ergonomic furniture, adequate lighting, air
recirculation, antibacterial materials and thermal and acoustic insulation
play a fundamental role.
