How do you create the perfect restoration project? How to satisfy customers and users at the same time, and how to
be faithful to our creative principles? The award-winning ‘El Equipo Creativo’ studio tells us about their experience
designing unique gastronomic spaces.

Gastronomy is an experience that is not only
eaten, but lived. And as such, the space in
which this experience occurs plays a very
important role. It should assist how the experience
should be lived with the five senses,
not only with taste and smell, which would be
the properly “gastronomic” ones. As a starting
point, this is already a big challenge,
and we like challenges. We try to understand
the gastronomy and hospitality sector from
very different perspectives, not only from the
designer’s perspective, but also from that of
our clients, and of course from that of the end
user. Above all, we try to ensure that this end
customer enjoys our space. Thus, we work in
a very conceptual way and we create unique
and special proposals for each project that
fit into the philosophy and / or gastronomic
proposal of our client. Each client and each
project are different and that is why we believe
that our response at the design level must
be unique. It is very important to listen and
understand the expectations and needs of the
project. If we were to make the parallels with
the world of fashion, our work would be more
like that of a tailor who makes tailored suits
rather than that of a large brand with a very
defined aesthetic. This is probably why each
of our projects are very different from each
other.
The script of a movie
Using a cinematographic parallelism, the “design
concept” would be something similar to
the script of the film, which helps to define all
the characters and sequences of a film. The
first thing we do when “writing the script” is
to enquire and listen a lot, to understand what
our client is looking for, what he is going to
offer, what type of clientele he will be targeting,
and what are their expectations. Then we
look for a powerful concept related specifically
to each project, which makes each one
different and unique. Normally the concept is
related to the place where it is located, with
the surrounding landscape, with the traditions
of that place, with its culture, with its crafts,
with its traditions, etc. Other times it is
accompanied by a gastronomic concept from
another place, for example, Japanese or Peruvian,
and in these cases, we try to make the
design of the space also help us understand
and to “travel” to those cultures.
We like to work on the inner envelope in all
its aspects, that is, to create a leading element
that surrounds us, such as the looms in the
Pacta Restaurant or the ceramic “wave” in
the Blue Wave cocktail bar. We also pay special
attention to the ceilings, which we treat
as one of the main “facades” of the project,
such as the reflective ceiling in the One Ocean
Restaurant, or the organic ceiling in the Ikebana
Restaurant. We experiment with materials
and try to take them to the extreme of
their possibilities, be it ropes, threads, fabrics,
wood or graphic elements. All these strategies
end up creating the seal of ‘El Equip Creative’,
although each of our projects is completely
different.
