Architecture underscored
Coco Chanel herself inspired the ‘concept design’ of the Hotel Palacio Vallier, which underpinned the refurbishment
of a 14th century building in the heart of Valencia thanks to a exquisite revision of the modernism of the 30s with
local components.

A project developed by Janfri & Ranchal
Studio.
This is a concept design that delves into the timelessness
of perfect geometries following the
stylistic ideology of the iconic Coco Chanel.
Defined volumes, natural textures and aesthetic
details travel through history and are recreated
in Valencian art deco.
The original configuration of the façade has
been respected. Within its cover original rosettes
with pineapple-shaped details have
been rescued and have been used to reorder
the volumes. Inside, black, gold and beige are
the predominant colours. «We have decorated
Modernism and Valencian Art Deco with
an avant-garde background. To this we have
added the furniture from a multitude of local
firms, colour concepts and resources with tension”,
explains Janfri Ranchal.
This is what they now call ‘new art deco’. In
the common spaces, “we have tried to recreate
the lines and the traces of the common architecture,
underlining certain elements with
black lines, emphasizing arches, mouldings
and cornices”.
Rooms that tell a story
In the rooms “there is an ambivalence between
individual temperament and coherence
stylistic that extends to the entirety”. In suites
like the presidential one they have kept the
original marble floors and interior carpentry;
and have recovered items such as a freestanding
bathtub. Baroque style flourishes in the
Lladró suite, signature pieces, an antique fireplace
in dark wood and rosette ceilings. “We
have reproduced the original ceilings working
in conjunction with a workshop specialized in
historical plaster”.
Very different is the 404, the warmest and
most urban room, where the singular design
it is drawn together by a powerful original
wooden beam and sloping ceilings. The brick
wall and the furniture have been adapted to
the height of the room are a small change with
respect to the aesthetics of the rest of the suites.
The restaurant with a cellar, called La Perfumería,
sits on an old and exceptional Roman
perfumery. As Ranchal concludes: “We have
created a sophisticated design, at the same
time friendly and timeless”.
